Jerzy Buzek has served as a Member of the European Parliament continuously since 2004.
From 2009 to 2012, he served as President of the European Parliament, becoming the first and, to date, the only person from Central and Eastern Europe to hold this position.
During the 9th parliamentary term, he served as a member of the European Parliament’s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE), which he chaired from 2014 to 2019. He is currently the rapporteur for the key regulation on the EU internal markets for hydrogen, natural gas and renewable gases. In addition, on behalf of the European People’s Party (EPP), the leading political group in the European Parliament, he will lead the work on the corresponding directive.
He also led the European Parliament’s negotiating team on new legislation concerning mandatory filling levels for European gas storage facilities.
In previous years, he served as the European Parliament’s rapporteur for numerous key legislative files, including the Just Transition Fund, the revision of the Gas Directive, the Regulation on security of gas supply, and the 7th Framework Programme for Research and Innovation.
In 2016, Euractiv ranked him among the three most influential figures in European energy policy in its EurActory40 ranking. He was named the best Polish Member of the European Parliament by the Rzeczpospolita daily in 2008 and 2018, while Brussels-based The Parliament Magazine named him MEP of the Year three times, in 2006, 2013 and 2020.
From 1997 to 2001, Jerzy Buzek served as Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland. His government implemented major reforms of public administration, education, healthcare and the pension system, and launched Poland’s negotiations for membership of the European Union.
He is a Knight of the Order of the White Eagle.
